Developers introduce mechanism to tokenize burned ETH on Ethereum network

A group of developers introduced a mechanism to tokenize ETH that has been permanently removed from circulation on the Ethereum network through a process known as burning.

Called BETH, it is an ERC-20 token designed to formalize and make visible the process of burning ETH, which is the act of sending ETH to an irretrievable address where it can no longer be accessed or spent.

Each BETH token represents one ETH that has been verifiably burned, providing a 1:1 receipt of the destroyed ETH. This expands on Ethereum's existing burn mechanics, particularly those introduced by EIP-1559 in August 2021, which burns a portion of transaction fees to reduce ETH's circulating supply.

However, unlike EIP-1559, where a portion of gas fees is automatically removed from supply, BETH is a mechanism in which a user must voluntarily burn their ETH by sending it to a contract.

So far, only 0.35 ETH ($1500) has been burned by an aggregate of 90 users, resulting in the creation of 0.35 BETH tokens, according to Etherscan.

BETH was created by a group called the Ethereum Community Foundation (not to be confused with the Ethereum Foundation), which framed BETH as an experimental tool to make Ethereum's burn process more usable without altering its economic fundamentals.

Several other Ethereum community members emphasized the experimental nature of BETH, describing it as a receipt for burned ETH, not a token with inherent value, and cautioned users against treating it as such.

Uniswap founder Hayden Adams voiced skepticism over BETH. In a post on X on Aug. 31, he argued that Ethereum's existing burn mechanism under EIP-1559, active since August 2021, already provides a cryptographic proof of ETH burn with every transaction.

Adams added that Uniswap alone has contributed to burning $4 billion worth of ETH, suggesting that the ecosystem already has a robust value flywheel. Adams questioned the necessity of BETH, stating , "No need to incentivize people to set their ETH on fire with no benefit."
